Is it the size, the clarity, the cut, the color? We all are all familiar with the 4C’s, and we know that the price of a diamond is based on all of these factors. But how do these measures apply to colored diamonds? Is a pale pink diamond more valuable or expensive than the same sized clear diamond? Are blue diamonds worth more than yellow ones? Here’s what you need to know about fancy colored diamonds. Read Our Top Diamond Jewelry Retailer Comparison Guide Learn How to Buy Diamonds Like a Pro I remember someone discussing colored stones, and their respective prices last year, as they were getting engaged, and I was lost. Beyond the price being high, I had no frame of reference if they were getting a good deal, how impressed I was supposed to be, or any general information that could have let me add to the conversation more than “Wow, that sounds amazing.” So, if you’re ever in this situation, or just to satisfy your general curiosity, we’re going to put the debate of colored versus clear diamonds to rest once and for all. Understanding the ColorsNow you know why the color of your diamond matters. But what color options are available? Well, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has a color grading system that ranges from letters D to Z. A grade D diamond would be considered absent of color and completely clear, while a Z-grade being heavily colored. Here is a summary of the classification system:
These are the most common types of diamonds. These diamonds are best paired with a platinum setting, as other metals and colors may cause a tinted reflection on the diamond, not letting it sparkle to its true potential.
These stones appear colorless to the naked eye, but when magnified you can see traces of tint. They cost less than their colorless counterparts.
These are diamonds with a really faint tint that appears yellowish, gray, or brown. These are great when paired with a gold setting because the gold will grab more attention away from the slight tint of the diamonds.
This category of diamonds has a tint that is visible to the naked eye. The tint can be yellow, brown, or another warm color. Again, the ideal setting would be gold.
Heavily tinted diamonds are the rarest and most expensive. They come in various tints, starting from yellow, blue, pink, and progressing all the way to brown. Their tint is perfectly visible even when the rock is mounted. They are popularly known as fancy-colored diamonds. Colored or Colorless?Ultimately the choice between colored or colorless diamond comes down to the wearer’s preference. If you don’t like colored diamonds, it shouldn’t matter how much they’re worth, go with a clear one. But if we’re just talking about value, generally a colored diamond is considered more valuable than a clear one. We can’t stop there though. Even with colored diamonds, there is a ranking order between which shades are more expensive than other ones. For instance, yellow-hued diamonds are considered to have a lower worth compared to many colorless ones. On the other hand, pink and blue diamonds are considered rarer and can carry a pretty big price tag, but they are still not considered as valuable as red diamonds. What accounts for the dramatic variation in price and value?RarityThe rarer the diamond, the more it’s going to be worth. The order from most common to most rare follows:
It should be noted, that whole, solid yellow diamonds can be valued higher than clear diamonds. Demand vs. supplyWhile not everyone prefers colored diamonds, the demand for them is still higher than its supply, and that is why their value continues to increase. So, are colored diamonds for you or do you prefer a more classic, less attention grabbing stone? Whatever your choice, always make sure to buy from a reputable jeweler. They will be able to give you the most options, pricing, and selection not available to many other stores. Seven out of ten of the most expensive diamonds ever sold in an auction are colored. We all love our diamond rings. In fact, the bigger they come, the better. Unfortunately, at times you, or your loved one, find yourselves in a situation where your budget doesn’t quite match the rock size you want. Read Our Top Diamond Jewelry Retailer Comparison Guide This is where having a little extra knowledge about diamond shapes comes in handy. Certain cuts make the stone look much bigger than its actual carat size. Learn How to Buy Diamonds Like a Pro Check out our top seven picks: 1. The Emerald CutThis cut is popular among royalty, so you’re already off to a good start. It is a rectangular shape that features a wide surface, which makes it elongated and looking large. It might not be the most sparkling cut, but it will certainly look bigger than its actual size. It is a great pick if you want a ring that will grab people’s attention without necessarily blinding them. Check Out Some Beautiful Emerald Cut Diamonds 2. The Princess CutThe princess cut is the second most popular shape for diamonds, and with good reason. It’s a relatively newer design, first created in the 1980’s, and is shaped like a four-sided pyramid. Because of its shape, the sides of the diamonds jut out, resulting in about a 15% larger measurement on two sides than when compared to a round cut diamond. Check Out Some Beautiful Princess Cut Diamonds 3. The Oval CutAn oval cut elongates the diamond as it forms the two ends of the oval. Just like the emerald cut, that increased length is what adds to the surface area of the ring, thus creating a perception that the ring itself is massive. Check Out Some Beautiful Oval Cut Diamonds 4. The Radiant CutThis cut makes the cut not really because of its shape, but rather because of the way it plays with light. As its name suggests, it offers maximum sparkle, and flashes in a way that makes demands attention. If you want to shine, literally, this is the one for you. Check Out Some Beautiful Radiant Cut Diamonds 5. The Pear or Teardrop CutLike the oval cut, the pear cut looks bigger than it actually may be because of its elongated shape. The main difference between the two is that the pear cut has slightly shaved sides, causing a more dramatic effect as the diamond tapers down. When people look at your ring, they’ll see the wider surface area on top, without noticing that it slants inward towards your setting. Check Out Some Beautiful Pear Shaped Diamonds 6. The Round CutIt all comes down to math and how surface size is calculated, but this timeless style is the clear winner when it comes to making your diamond look bigger than it actually is. Just keep in mind, since a round diamond doesn’t slant or curve one way or another, it will usually come with a slightly higher price tag than other cuts for the same size. Check Out Some Beautiful Round Cut Diamonds Addtional Cheat SheetThe shape is not the only thing you can manipulate to make your diamond look bigger. Once you’ve selected your ideal style, or decided to work with a jeweler to create a bespoke ring, try combining it with the following design features for even more sparkle: Add a mirrored plate: when you use a mirrored plate in your ring’s setting, it will reflect more light. Reflection is good because it adds more depth to your stone, causing it to look bigger. Choose a white band: a white band will reflect more light compared to any other color band. Again, the reflection will add depth and make the diamond look bigger. Go for thin prongs: thinner prongs on your ring’s setting means that they will cover less of the diamond. The contrast of the small prongs, compared to the large rock, only adds to its size. Smaller surrounding stones – if you couple your diamond with substantial smaller stones around it, the center stone will look massive by comparison. Who says you can’t have the diamond you deserve, or at least make it appear that way until you can upgrade later. Always make sure to buy from quality sellers. They might even have some further tricks up their sleeves to get you studded out.
